May 31 , 2008 - Cardinal Ordains 27 Men To the Order of Deacon
Brighton, MA - Cardinal Seán P. O'Malley ordained 27 men to the Order of Deacon on Saturday, May 31st at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross.
Reverend Richard M. Erikson, Ph.D., V.G., Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia for the Archdiocese said, "Pope Benedict XVI recently highlighted the importance of the permanent diaconate for its ability to 'give witness in the world of today, as well as in the working world, of the presence of faith, of the sacramental ministry and the diaconal dimension of the sacrament of Orders.'
We join with Cardinal Seán and all the people of the Archdiocese in extending congratulations and our deep prayers as these men begin this important ministry in our Church and in their own communion with Christ." Since 1976, the Archdiocese of Boston has ordained over 200 men as deacons.
A deacon is ordained and missioned by Christ through the bishop to minister to the needy and the poor and to be a minister of Word and Sacrament, working in obedience to his bishop and in close fraternal cooperation with priests (Permanent Diaconate Office, Archdiocese of Boston).
