CATHOLICS IN BOSTON CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH (Boston, Massachusetts)

Office of Cultural Diversity - Black Catholic Ministries asks everyone to begin the celebration of Black History Month by participating in the annual Black History Month Mass. The liturgy will be on February 4, 2007 at 2:00 PM, at St. Patrick Church located at 400 Dudley Street in Roxbury. The Archdiocese of Boston Black Catholic Choir will provide the music. Update on Archdiocese of Boston Black Catholic Choir’s trip to Ireland

We currently are not taking any more reservations as all spaces are filled. We appreciate the positive response that this announcement has generated. Also, there will not be a meeting about this trip on February 26th at St. Katharine Drexel Parish in Dorchester. We apologize for the confusion and inconvenience, and we appreciate your interest.

Race, Education and Democracy Lecture
You are invited to the 2007 Simmons College/Beacon Press Race, Education and Democracy Lecture and Book Series. Your attendance at Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum's 2006 lectures helped to make the inaugural year of the Series a huge success. This year we are pleased to announce that Dr. James D. Anderson, Professor of History and Educational Policy Studies and head of the Department of Educational Policy Studies at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign will deliver the lectures in the 2007 Race, Education and Democracy Lecture and Book Series.
Dr. Anderson, the leading historian of Black Education in the country, is the author of the award winning book, The Education of Blacks in the South: 1860-1935 and of numerous scholarly articles and presentations. He has served as project consultant to and is featured in award winning film documentaries and has served as an expert witness in federal desegregation and affirmative action cases. What follows is a listing of the dates, topics and locations of the lectures:
March 14: The Historical and Contemporary Value of Education in African American Communities
March 15: African American Struggles to Reduce the Achievement Gap: Lessons for Educators, Community Activists and Policymakers
April 5: The Historical Context for Understanding Race Conscious Means to Educational Equality: Lessons from the Louisville and Seattle School Desegregation Cases
April 6: Civic Education, Citizenship and Immigration: Race and Democracy on the 150th Anniversary of the Dred Scott Decision
All lectures are scheduled for 4:00-6:00 pm, at Simmons College in the Linda K. Paresky Conference Center. We encourage you to register for the lectures on the Series website (raceandeducation.com), which will be operational Monday, February 5, 2007.
