Parish Stewardship Resources

Resources

FYI

When people volunteer they want to be:

  • challenged.
  • feel useful.
  • gain knowledge.
  • see results.
  • use their gifts
  • share their faith.

When people volunteer they don't want to:

  • be involved in poorly organized activity.
  • be left holding the bag.
  • be unsupported
  • be unappreciated.
  • be involved in power struggles
  • feel as if they cannot "get out."

People volunteer:

  • for personal growth.
  • for faith development.
  • for love.
  • to set an example for their children.
  • for the importance of the task.
  • to meet a need.
  • to spread the Good News.

Input from Participants in the Parish Ministry Foundations Leadership Skills Track

The following material, provided by the Office of Volunteer Resources, is for your use in combination with the Parish Needs Assessment and before you ask people for a commitment of Time and Talent. It is meant to aid you in planning for volunteer assistance in various ministries as you implement Parish Stewardship.

When people answer the call to share their unique gifts, they expect, and deserve, an enthusiastic response.  If you ask for help, you should be “ready to put the volunteers to work.”  If you aren’t prepared to do that, it is best to wait to ask for their help.  Planning ahead for their involvement is the way you answer their willingness to enter a ministry of service.

After you have reviewed the material, please feel free to contact the Office of Volunteer Resources (617-746-5840 or email Ann_Lally@RCAB.org) for clarification or to request additional resource material.

We would welcome the opportunity to promote your Stewardship effort by presenting a workshop to support the ministries in your parish. The workshop for staff, parish leadership, ministry coordinators and stewardship commission members will:

  • suggest “best practices” for volunteer management in a faith setting.

  • encourage planning BEFORE inviting people to enter ministry of service.

  • urge the development of role descriptions for parish ministries.

  • recommend setting parish standards for terms of commitment.

  • indicate how to access volunteers from within the parish community.

  • explore ways to invite people to enter ministry of service.

  • point out how to enable the volunteer in ministry to succeed.

  • support developing a specific retention strategy and recognition plan.
